Establishing Credibility for Your Blog and Beyond
But first, a story.
Years and years ago, my sister was in a youth choir. This was a really good youth choir. You had to audition every year, it was not guaranteed that you’d get in, they practiced a lot, they sang in places like Carnegie Hall, and their concerts were amazing.
At one of those concerts, the conductor decided to demonstrate essentially how a choir works in harmony. He had the choir sing one of their songs, but gave each member permission to make one mistake. That’s about 50 or so mistakes throughout the 3-ish minute song. They sang through, and I’m telling you, it was like a whole different choir had showed up. Their voices were still beautiful, but it was hard to ignore the mistakes that stood out like sore thumbs. You couldn’t get into the rhythm of the song, you couldn’t find its beauty, and you couldn’t help but feel a little less confident in their abilities with every missed or incorrect note.
Out of context, you wouldn’t trust that choir—with all those mistakes—to sing the phone book, let alone Happy Birthday or your company’s jingle. You wouldn’t invite that choir to sing at a wedding, you wouldn’t have them at your special event, and you definitely wouldn’t leave that concert of mistakes and go tell your family, friends, and acquaintances about this amazing choir they just have to go see and hear.
Why Credibility as a Blogger Matters
When I started my writing and editing business 5 or so years ago, I thought of the importance of credibility. One mistake is understandable in your writing, two to five are forgivable. But consistently blemished, clunky, and hard-to-read content inevitably hurts your reputation as a trusted source and business.
Credibility may seem like the prerogative of businesses, but lifestyle bloggers need it just as much. You are talking to devoted, sometimes vulnerable, audiences who seek and trust your advice and solutions. Your credibility secures your audience. The best way to establish that credibility is through inspired, thoughtful, and practical advice…and hiring an editor for your blog.
My Case for the Editor
A blog editor looks for many things while scouring your words. First, they look for basic mistakes. But then they move on to usage, structure, punctuation, formatting, and more. We clean your blog up to ensure it reads smoothly, is fun, understandable, and complete.
All of this is done by someone who loves words and is passionate about helping your audience return to you again and again for advice, tips, tricks, recommendations, and relatable stories.
Additionally, editing is one of the most affordable services you can invest in for your business, blog, and brand. Usually, editing services are priced by word and the average blog length ranges from $60-$100.
Conclusion
Your credibility is what makes you your audience’s go-to source. It’s what makes you a favorite and a relatable friend to people who see you as an expert of sorts. Blog writers and editors are vital companions on the credibility journey, helping businesses, brands, blogs, and more avoid mistakes in their copy that chip away at an influencer’s trustworthiness.
