What Does a Blog Writer Do?
I’ve been a writer long enough now to confidently talk about what I do and offer real advice. Believe me, the imposter syndrome was very real at the beginning. I used far too many words to justify my job as a freelance writer. Now I have it down to more of an elevator pitch and minimal hedging: I’m a freelance writer for bloggers and businesses. I write blogs, newsletters, and social media. Simple and sweet. But what does a blog writer actually do? Like on a day-to-day basis, what would a blog writer do for your personal or business blog? Let’s break it down!
Do I Even Need a Writer for My Blog?
I feel like I answer this question in every single one of these journal articles. But, yes, you do need a writer for your blog. If you’re just starting out, gaining some momentum would be best before hiring a writer. But if you’ve hit a good stride, want to expand your content, or need to spread your online footprint as a business then you need a writer to help you out.
And it’s not because you’re a bad writer. Instead, it’s because blogs take time to write, edit, format, upload, and plan. They just do. I estimate two hours per blog post for my clients. Multiply that by the standard 2-3 blogs per week, and that is a lot of time for business owners and personal bloggers who have families, homes, and other activities to manage.
What Does a Blog Writer Do?
So, yes, you need a blog writer. Because we do all the things that take up enormous amounts of time. This includes, but is not limited to, the following.
Blog Writing
This is the obvious one. As your blog writer I will, of course, write your blog. This includes planning content and scheduling it out (usually in an Excel file), researching the topic, gathering information from you, sourcing products and links, and writing an SEO-friendly title and headings.
I’ll also pull quotes that work well for social media and brainstorm some social media content. Even if I’m not the one who is managing your social media, I still do this because I’m kind of in the content and it’s easy for me to pinpoint what should be highlighted. Writing your blog is so much more than just typing words!
Editing for Every Blog Type
Then, I edit. I read back through the blog, adjust where needed, add or subtract, and ensure the copy is clean. I am human, so sometimes there’s a typo I find after I hit Publish, but luckily it’s all editable and I’m happy to go back in to fix anything that needs it.
There’s another aspect to blog editing as well. If you love writing, or want to send drafts or outlines, then I am happy to work as your blog editor! I also edit AI-generated blogs. I resist AI as much as possible and do not use it in my own writing, but if AI is a tool you want to use, then I am happy to be the human behind the machine.
Social Media For Bloggers
I am not a social media manager. However, as I said before, as I’m writing your blog I’m often actively brainstorming how the content can be used across all your marketing platforms. So, for all my clients, I offer some social media writing and graphics services that directly relate to the blogs. That way, I’m taking one more item off your list and giving you another resource for advertising your blogs and business.
This service can be applied to Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest.
Photo Sourcing
Typically, clients give me access to photos I can use, but part of my job is choosing which photos work best, and hunting down stock images, product images, and other photos that fit into the blog’s topic and format. This is another time-consuming part of blogging that I’m happy to take off your plate. However, it is one of the more collaborative parts of the job; we work together to ensure the photos are on brand and work well with the content.
Blog SEO
Finally, the big one: blog SEO. I am always learning more about blog SEO as it changes and shifts in this tech-forward world. Including external links, Alt text, tags, and more bring your blog more to the front of the queue as readers search out your expertise and products. It’s a competitive world out there, but you have something special to offer and SEO is a battle worth fighting—but you don’t have to do it alone.
